Happy 50th
Patrick White’s novel, Voss, was first published in 1957.
Chris Middendorp of the Age chides his fellow Australians:
It’s the old story: there’s no end to our adulation of sport stars, but authors seem pretty low on our awareness level. I guess White’s Nobel Prize for Literature can’t compete with the Don’s prodigious cricket scores.
My “Second Reader,” Scott, recommended I read Voss. I pass along his recommendation. Voss is a profound and staggering work.
As Middendorp writes:
Voss combines the logic of a dream with the metaphysical power of revelation. White’s evocative prose is almost impossible to describe; it must be experienced. It’s the literary equivalent to widescreen cinema.
